DA’s Vasco Da Gama Elected as Speaker of City of Joburg

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Vasco da Gama has been elected as the new speaker of the City of Johannesburg.

Da Gama got 147 votes out of 266 ballots cast on Monday in the City of Johannesburg Council

He was up agains the African National Congress’ (ANC) Sibongile Mgcina who garnered 119 votes.

Da Gama previously served as speaker during former City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba’s term.

He will now preside over the election of the mayor and council whip for the city of Johannesburg
